| I've developed a character whom I call 'the serious writer' for a while now, with half a mind to use him in a novel. After writing a few unintentionally funny pieces about him, I felt I should resurrect him from the fierce realm of farce - that's why I began this piece. In the end, the writer's thoughts and concerns turn to what is the centre of my own writing also: existential issues and masculinity. The back story relates to the fact that I lived near Camden Town, London, for many years without engaging my creative faculties, a jealous observer and blocked writer. The interlude on science has to do with my own original training as a scientist, which made me sceptical of the professional sceptics. |
