"All ice wants to be water"

Jean Sprackland

The newborn sliding
across the slick surface
of my wife's stomach
reminds her that she is liquid:

Something that sloshes, spills
and leaks.

The baby's head is hard
like a chunk of ice. Limited
in its actions. It wants to care
about spilling, flooding and leaking.

To have that freedom would be
beautiful, its movements say.
After all, all ice wants to be water.
