Summer, you canned hot pepper jam and pickled jalapenos, brewed blackberry
wine in our bathtub. Your fingers always tasted of vinegar and cumin. All for
later, you said, but winter comes and all I have is our empty house, sixteen
smashed mason jars, a face smudged with jam and tears.

Jolene Barto resides in a haunted house in Nashville, TN. She recently received
her Creative Writing MFA degree from Murray State University. Her past works
have been published with Collage, HouseWork, New Madrid and Trapeze
